I mean they actually were not. My great grandfather owned hundreds of acres and was rich as shit as black man in the south. Until ironically the boomer generation fucked it up my family that is still in the south was high on the hog.

One of the characters in the old Charlie Chan movies was a black man named Birmingham Brown. As an actor he was respectful and well respected, and his role made him a lot of money. That couldn't have happened in a racist society.
And some rando on IMDB commented that because he played a comic relief role, it meant everyone in production was racist. I swear, the demand for racism in this country has exceeded supply for a very long time.
