An NPC will believe what the group believes, to the detriment of what they said and did as quickly as a few minutes ago.
The last thing any of them want to be is an exiled apostate to the group. Because no one in the group hates others more than former members outside the think sphere realizing the group is not all it said it was.
I think it's just a deeper understanding of NPC. I've had to deal with it recently where something wasn't working, and I had people saying they needed to work harder to get it done. I got some sleep and came back with a solution. They were actually angry at me for not working hard.
That's just NPC behavior with extra steps.
