I think it's just a deeper understanding of NPC. I've had to deal with it recently where something wasn't working, and I had people saying they needed to work harder to get it done. I got some sleep and came back with a solution. They were actually angry at me for not working hard.
Stupid people hate looking stupid.
They'll believe any ridiculous lie you tell them, as long as it gives them an excuse to not confront their inadequacy.
