Huh? AC-4 is just the newest compression. Because the stream can have multiple audio channels, it seems like they're thinking of including different audio sources from the event as different channels and letting the customer choose the mix instead of premixing and sending one stream of audio.
Maybe I'm wrong, but if that's the case, this is as "abusable" as right/left stereo balance.
Anything you're worried about the broadcaster muting or adjusting, they can already do in the mixing booth before it's sent to you.
Not listening to pundits isn't a bad thing, althoughit may mean losing details like just which player had possession at the momen. Crowd noise i would argue should be left in as otherwise someone should just mute the entire broadcast. Can certainly see it being abused to mute any chants deemed verboten, though.
Years ago, long before the internet was huge, the French CBC in Canada had a strike. The announcers & others walked off, but they still had to broadcast NHL games live.
So they just... broadcast them. No announcers, no play-by-play. Just the skates on the ice and fans in the stands.
It... Was... GREAT! Like being at the game! Their ratings went WAY UP. I watched 2-3 games and loved it.
They rapidly returned to work after that 😄 knowing they were worse than useless.
“My niggers got beaten by their niggers, but the worst part is that a white man said words about it that hurt my feelings even more! If only I could stop hearing mean words!”
Muting announcers sounds amazing to me.
It does, but it's going to be abused for other things as well.

A lot of boxing has women commentators that are extremely annoying to me. Hope this becomes more common

It's been fairly commonplace for some time for MLB streams to offer an option to switch to the radio play-by-play audio synced to the video feed.
Lots of fans prefer the radio commentary given it's more descriptive by necessity. And for nostalgia.
