I'm with you buddy. Windows XP wasn't free, but it was extremely open and users could do whatever the hell they wanted with it. Windows Vista was the start of Microsoft meddling with the user, and Windows 8 was the start of admin no longer being truly admin. it's been extremely downhill ever since.
modern Linux distros remind me a lot of the Windows XP days, and it's been very refreshing.
