I'll bet the anecdote about him overcoming a "deranged businessman" was more than a bit self-serving DARVO. The developer's side of the story would likely be interesting to hear.
Also, it was much easier to win national championships when almost nobody competed in them and there was no money as a motivator.
He posted a video of it up on YouTube (the link is in the article) basically it’s an overly long rant of a typical game programmer story. He setup a freelance company to do game ports. Customer hired him to do a doom port to 3do for Christmas in July as another team is about 80% done but won’t be able to finish for Christmas. He agrees. Customer never sends the team’s work over. He ported doom to the jaguar so he uses that port and just finishes on time.
The whole “deranged” part is that the customer never sent the work over and that at the end the customer didn’t like the port and was recording their phone calls to try to entrap him into saying he has agreed to certain features that he claims he never agreed to so the customer could sue him.
