Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo Celebrate 'Wizard of Oz' Remake 'Wicked for Good' as LGBTQ+ Triumph: 'The Gayer the Better'
At the London premiere of "Wicked for Good," the film's stars, pop singer Ariana Grande and actress Cynthia Erivo, told the press the "Wizard of Oz" has "always been a queer place" and added, "the gayer, the better."
Is the book worth reading? I read the Baum Oz books as a kid. How was Wizard of Oz a queer place? I’ve read Baum’s book. Don’t think he had that in mind.
The book reframes the villain of the "Wizard of Oz" as a misunderstood victim, and "The Great and Powerful Oz" an abuser / coward who abuses said witch and then hides inside the city of Oz forever.
It was written in the early 00s but sounds pretty modern crap on someone else’s story.
It became a highly successful stage play / musical that sold almost exclusively to women. "Wicked" helped write the playbook for the "force is female", girl-boss lead popular media revolution. So many other movies (etc.) followed this example.
It's not. But you know how the gays like to "claim" things as "icons?" Judy Garland was a mainstream celebrity who associated herself with them. Her dad was gay, at least one of her husbands was bi, she hung out at gay bars with friends. Basically, the Lady Gaga of the 40s.
And once they claim someone, they'll claim all their work. Then claim the source material. To be a little fair, it is best known as a fairy land of campy musical theater, rainbows, and VERY important shoes.
But seriously, it's just the standard thing where they project of themselves onto a thing they liked and then it becomes a social contagion where one must like it to prove they're a member of the group.
That is true. Just like they somehow see “queer coding” in every book and comic book from the beginning of time. The original Baum books are good.
