Would you like to know more?

Black and brown Minnesotans get worse sleep than white people. Researchers at the University of Minnesota say it’s hurting their health.

Sleep is absolutely a determinant of health,” said Dr. Rachel Widome, an associate professor in epidemiology and community health at the University of Minnesota. “Sleep has an impact on a whole host of health outcomes from physical to mental.”

Structural racism is also a fundamental contributor to sleep disparities, Johnson said. For example, people of color are still more likely to live in neighborhoods that are not conducive to sleep, areas experts sometimes refer to as “sleep deserts.” Air pollution can cause inflammation and contribute to sleep apnea. Places with higher pollution are often close to highways and have fewer trees and sidewalks–attributes that allow people to exercise safely.

One example: In many Somali homes in the Twin Cities, smoke detectors with low batteries beep around the clock. Many believe the devices beep when they’re working properly, Abdifatah said, or that it’s the landlord’s responsibility to “fix” them. Such misinformation could be corrected with a community-wide effort.

Oh fuck off. Muh X desert.

Places with higher pollution are often close to highways and have fewer trees and sidewalks–attributes that allow people to exercise safely.

It ain't the lack of trees and sidewalks making exercise dangerous in brown neighborhoods.

In many Somali homes in the Twin Cities, smoke detectors with low batteries beep around the clock.

it’s the landlord’s responsibility to “fix” them

Most leases don't cover maintenance items like batteries or filters. That said, I know a few landlords that will throw in furnace filters for free, otherwise rentoids will use the same filter indefinitely until the HVAC system chokes to death on years of dust.

I doubt a landlord will willingly enter a Somali home to do anything, though, for obvious reasons.

I have never thought to ask a landlord to replace smoke alarm batteries and I damn sure wouldn't sit around and bear the chirp because I didn't want to spend a few bucks on batteries.

Black and brown Minnesotans…

…don’t exist.

Sleep is absolutely a determinant of health

Good to hear they don’t get it.

Structural racism

Doesn’t exist.

people of color are still more likely to live in neighborhoods that are not conducive to sleep

Maybe they should move. They get free rent, after all.

“sleep deserts.”

I want the person who came up with this term kept awake for 12 days straight.

Air pollution

Stop polluting it, then.

One example: In many Somali homes in the Twin Cities, smoke detectors with low batteries beep around the clock.

Maybe don’t bring subhumans incapable of comprehending modern technology into human society, then.

Such misinformation could be corrected with a community-wide effort.

Such as executing them all.
