No friends to the right, no enemies to the left. This has been a well-understood phenomenon since at least the 70s. The left never disavow their own extremists while the right rushes to cut off anyone even remotely outside the Overton window. This is how you consistently cede political and cultural territory for 60+ years.
Vance has it right here. You only curtail your own extremists when the left does the same. You don’t follow rules created by your enemies when they don’t even bother to follow them first.
