I actually do have genuine concerns about what happens if both sides of the fight become comfortable with restricting speech. It's a rare thing to have and I kind of doubt we have the kind of populace who could recreate it should we end up losing it. It could vanish for generations, yet everyone online seems so flippant about abandoning it in order to win a fight in the moment, without any thought to the horizon.
Jimmy "the faggot" Kimmel was deplatformed for spreading misinformation that would have certainly got his employer sued to fuck and back again.
He's not in jail. He's not fined. He's not being taken to a CIA black site for involuntary dental work. He still has his free speech and I'm tired of hearing about the motherfucker.
I don't see how anyone doesn't think we lost actual free speech years ago. It may be getting even less free, but the crucial first crack was made over a decade ago. That was the hard part to recreate.
Like I get it, potentially even more more restrictive speech limitations might be looming, but actual "free" speech has already been lost, and simple up/down fluctuations of more/less restricted speech are not nearly as rare as a truly free speech society.

I have seen several online personalities on the right this week warming to the idea of abandoning the principle of free speech if it means dealing a blow against the left. It turns out there aren't very many principled individuals on either side of the fence.
The pro-free speech crowd lost when the government (ran by leftists and technocrats) only prosecuted right wingers for speech and not the left. Young people growing up see that 1A clearly hasn’t protected them from extreme prejudice, so why not toss it out and try fighting fire with fire?
Because if you throw it out rather than continuing to fight for it, you ensure that your grandchildren won't live to see it return you shortsighted fool.

For over a decade now the left has been calling everyone on the right nazis (even milquetoast moderates like Charlie Kirk) and saying to kill all nazis. How is that not incitement and calls to violence?
Go watch some lefty reaction videos, see how disgustingly happy these spiteful mutants are that a guy who just wanted to talk to them was messily murdered in front of his wife and children. That's how much they hate us. If they thought they could get away with it, they would happily murder you or me too, because they have been inciting each other non stop for years.
I suspect the only way to avoid a civil war at this point is to have a national divorce. We're already two countries existing inside the same borders.
The “incitement” restriction goes out the window when your country is at war. No one is throwing you in jail or firing you for saying we should blow up ISIS, right? So what happens to free speech when you’re in a cold civil war and your enemies are domestic?
