Blizzard kept the head writer on staff that literally self inserted himself into a long dead lore character so he could write that guy as the Commander and Largest Simp Possible for his girlboss waifu, who he wrote into being the most important character in the universe for multiple expansions.
That's the kind of unrestrained they consider acceptable, so their staff is probably very unused to having to actually not do whatever they want on impulse.
I had posts removed on the wow subreddit during bfa for bringing up Danuser's larping and simping as Nathanos.
By that I mean linked to his official Twitter account where said larping and simping was happening. You know, the official account of the lead narrative director of the game at the time.
It was entirely a case of "everyone knows its happening, but only bad thinkers bring it up so anyone talking about it is treated as evil."
Like, he literally tweeted that the new Nathanos body was "looking into a dark mirror" which was the literal title of the short story that brought him back. There was zero lacking of context or misunderstanding of what he was doing.
Just rambling with what I remember off the top of my head.
Steve Danuser was the head narrative writer from I think BFA until DF, after being just another cog during Legion.
His first act of business was to take Nathanos Blightcaller (a major world boss in Vanilla who was killed off, faked his death but was otherwise a forgotten hunter trainer NPC afterwards), give him a brand new body in a shortstory (that looks suspiciously similar to Danuser himself except not bald or fat) in which Sylvanas specifically picks him to use her personal Valkyr (the things that give her so much power and make her unkillable) to give him superpowers and lead her army.
This leads into BFA, where he is basically the mission control in charge of every single quest and thing the Horde does. And spends the entire time acting as evil and edgy as possible, making sure there is zero question that the Horde is not the victim (though they still claim it) but the aggressor. Its one of the worst expansions ever, and the writing is the biggest part of it, that's just scratching the surface. They had to kill off Azshara and the last Old God they had in the final raid just to keep it afloat.
Between this and burning off KulTiras and the last Troll empire, they used up the literal last of the legacy lore characters and storylines and had to make original stuff to keep going.
All in service of Sylvanas, who is now narratively the most important character in the universe because she has been working for The Jailer this entire time, the guy who is the real bad guy of the story because he was behind every single plan ever, from Sargeras to the Lich King. And she was his stooge helping him towards his goal of erasing existence so he could rewrite it his way, except she was actually a slave so you need to just forgive her because she was the victim too!! And so she gets away with everything.
And like the other comment said, you could not bring up how the entire time Danuser, the head writer, was posting thirst and simp comments about Sylvanas during these years on his public twitter. It was all just coincidence.
He was forced out last November. We know it was forced because literally no one announced or noticed until February, when a random journalist reached out to him. And he was under clear NDA because he just said "nothing noteworthy to comment." So he was so awful even Blizzard themselves scrubbed him out, and they had to drag Metzen out of retirement to try and salvage things.

I haven't followed WOW in forever. Care to elaborate? This sounds hilarious.

That is amazing and horrible.
