A 51% opinion gets positive score and looks very popular, a 49% opinion gets a negative score and looks like a garbage take. By hiding the total votes they make it impossible to tell if +100 is a popular opinion or a 51%.
51% will show up as 'controversial'. You can also see it in the percentage of votes on posts.
I'm not sure what the 'controversial dagger' math is. I think it's by close total up/down votes or something like that, not a percent, but in any case it's rarely shown on comments that are definitely both significantly upvoted and downvoted. Mostly only seen on low total score comments. Also turned off by default.
