Stealing his dad's deer rifle sounds about right for that sort.
If that were the case it would have been a ruger.
Tons of boomers out there with a butchered milsurp in a cheap plastic sporter stock. I could definitely believe he stole it from one of them.
CaptPenguin made an excellent point about the idea of a .30-06 Mauser:

Sig bought out Mauser? Ugh, guess that's another good gun brand Ron Cohen will ruin with cheap parts and poor QC.
Actually, someone told me something interesting that I completely forgot.
Old Mausers are in 8mm. The Germans never had .30-06 cartridges.
k98 Mausers were converted by European governments into a large number of different cartridges, from 308 to, yes, 30-06.
However, said 30-06 conversions aren't exactly common, so this may not be applicable.
It could just be bubba'd to hell and back.
Edit: And, because I'm a dum-dum, I'll amend this; 1903 Springfield's are Mauser-action rifles, and chambered in 30-06.
There's also a 7mm Mauser that's a hunting cartridge. Anyway, if accurate, I'm sure this is a ruined surplus K98, or maybe some fudd wrecked one of the Yugo clones.
