k98 Mausers were converted by European governments into a large number of different cartridges, from 308 to, yes, 30-06.
However, said 30-06 conversions aren't exactly common, so this may not be applicable.
It could just be bubba'd to hell and back.
Edit: And, because I'm a dum-dum, I'll amend this; 1903 Springfield's are Mauser-action rifles, and chambered in 30-06.
Yeah, it could be a "wildcat" conversion, or whatever. But that makes it even less likely that it's a professional, and way more likely it's their dad's gun.
