Wow, this is retarded. Did they have any security at all? AI is the exploding industry, that data is worth more than gold. As evidenced by that a random software engineer had $7M in stock to begin with (unless he was with the company for a long time, and rode the stocks, but AI engineers' salaries are insane, so it could go either way.) These people are raking in the money.
Everyone involved here is retarded. xAI for lax security, the millionaire engineer for being a criminal when he could have just...continued to be a millionaire.

It's really, REALLY hard to keep an engineer on the inside from stealing your code. All it takes is a thumb drive or an email.
The biggest deterrent is the legal ramifications, as this engineer has likely destroyed his career and will be going to jail for corporate espionage.
He's up 7 mil, plus whatever he got from OpenAI for the corpo espionage. Even minus taxes, he's probably golden for life, what's a year or two in rich-person-jail?
in a few weeks, it will be
better to throw a known opportunist who would steal secrets for profit under the bus than risk going under trying to defend him.
