This monument that was put up in 2019, has a list of 2,800 children who never made it home, and never was put in a proper grave either. So yes not only do they have a number, they do have names too. Im willing to bet many more names have been "lost" though. Canada doesnt seem to interested in the truth, only in burying it.

In 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released its final report, which included 94 calls to action. Number 72 called upon the national government and the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation to create a register of all student deaths at residential schools.

Children die, especially 100 years ago! Disease takes a toll every year. Those who died & not returned to their tribal lands were buried in Christian fashion the same as Whites. One graveyard had (iirc) 2 of the Dean's own children in it, alongside the native kids who died. As well as other White children & adults.
Did children suffer in residential schools? Yes this is well documented.
Did 150K kids do well, got educations and joined modern civilization? Yes! But they are literally not allowed to speak! They were banned from presenting THEIR stories right from the start.
At the exact same timespan? The same number of orphaned White kids were imported to Canada from the UK. The same results: many suffered, many died but most were given to loving families who raised them as their own. NO inquires here! Because of race.

At no point have any graves been discovered, despite the schools being slandered as literal death camps, and the media claiming that tens of thousands have been 'found'. Not 2800. It seemed like every week in 2020, there would be a new "report" of "150" or "300" or "possibly 500 to 1000" mass graves found, all of them were false. ALL OF THEM. The closest anyone came was finding a settler cemetery that had been covered over, and was filled with locals.
The fact that almost no digging took place is the problem. When digging did take place? No graves were found. Sometimes it was just air pockets, sometimes it was just construction debris. Sometimes it was nothing at all.
And for that, the state, and even Civil Rights organizations openly supported a terrorist campaign against Catholics. Even when the Catholics being targeted, were the natives who'd run the residential schools for 40 years.
This has been a full on moral panic since 2020, and it has no evidence behind it. There is no evidence, and never has been, that the residential schools were death camps.
The strongest case is that the residential schools were intended to eliminate native culture by homogenizing Indian children, and that in some cases kids died of things like polio. This happened in the US too.
