The schism started well before Bane and Shad took control. Even before the David fiasco they tried to literally ban anyone who posted on T_D, because they didn't want to be associated with any dirty Right wingers in their "actually totally Leftist" revolt.
Honestly there was plenty of friction immediately between those who came from Twitter (like Hat and the TIA folks) and guys like me who came from 4chan because it was getting banned off /b/ there and wouldn't have been caught dead on reddit otherwise.
That was probably the original "disillusioned Leftie versus Right wing memester" schism that would go on to be repeated each time.
Halfkia was slightly different, since the schism was intentional. Bane and Shaddist were trying to run us all off well before the vote happened.
