That last point in their favour isn't sufficient, it's the bare minimum and common sense throughout most of history. Everything else about them is cringe and gay. Including the socialism. Which yes, you're right that just because they call themselves socialist wouldn't necessarily mean they are, it's their stated and enacted economic policies which make it so.

All the western lefty socialists before the commies got their marching orders from the USSR were full of praise for hitler and mussolini, who got all their ideas from their earlier 'pure' socialism, and they largely hoped to seize the same power he did and do similar things (and in america in particular did, FDR had some of em in his admin, controlling big bits of the new deal)
