History of the Scofield Bible (www.wrmea.org)

The Scofield Bible—The Book That Made Zionists of America’s Evangelical Christians
Although the Scofield Reference Bible contains the text of the King James Authorized Version, it is not the traditional Protestant bible but Cyrus I. Scofield’s annotated commentary that is problematic.

The Scofield Reference Bible promoted dispensationalism, the belief that between creation and the final judgement there would be seven distinct eras of God's dealing with man and that these eras are a framework for synthesizing the message of the Bible.

Satanic numerology. He loves that trick. I've never been sure why.

Perverting religious texts.. that I completely understand.

It's one-step removed from astrology, and women love that. Numerology is basically the male version, and makes it easy to cross the bridge.

Both are favorites of you-know-who, and where they come up with numbers like 2800 and six million.

It's from kabbalah, a form of jewish "magic". It's infiltrated institutions like freemasonry, who openly proclaim kabbalah as inspired for their teachings.

Even the KJV superstitions are ridiculous. People who know nothing about biblical texts and bible translating choose to believe it’s some magical or perfect bible instead of actually learning about biblical manuscripts and translating issues. In many cases they’re not even aware it’s an update of the 1611 done in 1726 and based on different manuscripts than most other bible translations.

I still can’t give you an answer to what the best bible is. NIV and ESV are not bad. Ultimately, you need a lot of notes or additional materials to help you understand the bible more and will still be uncertain and confused if you’re intelligent and not afraid of ambiguity and capable of admitting you don’t know something.

NIV 1984 is not bad.

After leftists corporate suits bought the copyright they made the propanda TNIV version.

After that failed to find an audience they rebranded TNIV as NIV and stopped making the original NIV.

Here is a comparison of versions

EDIT: Forgot to mention this is Numbers 5

NIV(1984)

16 " 'The priest shall bring her and have her stand before the LORD. 17 Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. 18 After the priest has had the woman stand before the LORD, he shall loosen her hair and place in her hands the reminder offering, the grain offering for jealousy, while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse. 19 Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, "If no other man has slept with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you. 20 But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have defiled yourself by sleeping with a man other than your husband"- 21 here the priest is to put the woman under this curse of the oath-"may the LORD cause your people to curse and denounce you when he causes your thigh to waste away and your abdomen to swell. [d] 22 May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells and your thigh wastes away.

and NIV now

‘The priest shall bring her and have her stand before the Lord. 17 Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. 18 After the priest has had the woman stand before the Lord, he shall loosen her hair and place in her hands the reminder-offering, the grain offering for jealousy, while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse. 19 Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, “If no other man has had sexual relations with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you. 20 But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husband”— 21 here the priest is to put the woman under this curse—“may the Lord cause you to become a curse[d] among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell. 22 May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries.”

And yes, I have seen this nonsense use to claim Christianity is for abortion and contains a recipe for an abortion multiple times online without comment to it being based entirely on speculation and other translations not supporting it.

I say, well if that is true, we can make abortion illegal except for the procedure described here. If you want an abortion you can drink diluted church floor sweepings and all other methods are illegal. Because we all know that drinking church floor sweepings will not cause an abortion.

I got a TNIV New Testament a long time ago without knowing anything about it. I remember it having something like language addressing all people instead of just men when it’s clear that’s the intention.

Its not the translation; its ignorant moderns assuming more ancient people are as stupid as they are. Anybody with a brain knows what Numbers 5 describes: a religious rite, specifically a religious right invoking Devine intervention and judgement. The punishment for adultery under Levitical law was death, but the law required witnesses. This rite was specifically prescribed for women accused of adultery by their husbands without the requisite proof. Neither the Levites nor the people thought dusty water was an abortifacient; the "rite of dirty water" was invoking God's judgement. This particular rite essentialy exonerated women accused of adultery without evidence, baring Devine intervention.

"Neither the Levites nor the people thought dusty water was an abortifacient"

Then the translation shouldn't say that it is, even if it is a divine abortion. That translation was absolutely chosen, despite the literal translation not matching it, to advocate that ancient Israelites thought bringing about a miscarriage of a bastard child was a proper course of action for adultery. The entire translation was made with an agenda.

This was just one example, whole retranslation chock full of proto wokism from what I remember. Not to mention that the central claim, that the formal English language had changed significantly from 1984 to the late 2000s, was wrong. Only what was considered by leftists to be politically correct had changed, and that was what the translation was tailored to.

I remember people warning that Zondervan would do it when they bought the copyright. I thought they were crazy. Some years later they were proven right, I was proven wrong.

ESV is okay, but it uses the Masoretic text for the Old Testament. The Orthodox Study Bible and Douay Rheims Bible both use the Greek Old Testament (Septuagint). The Douay Rheims is a bit harder to read, but from what I can tell has a more accurate translation. Not sure how the Orthodox Study Bible is with regard to readability.

Stone Choir is in the midst of a multi episode series arguing that the Old Testament was originally written in Greek. Very fascinating stuff if you're curious.
