Fighting with the commies. The Johnsonians had gotten what they needed out of him, and the Communists were fucking everywhere. I think they figured that with MLK out of the way, they could either seize control over the movement or let it completely burn down (the way that BLM burned itself down after stealing all that money from California dems).
Instead, the Communists saw it as their moment for a "General Uprising", and provoked the greatest internal domestic strife since the civil war, causing over 1,000 race riots, killing over 150 people, lasting most of the summer, and required the deployment of US Army Infantry and US Marines into the US to quell some of the rioting. You thought 2020 was bad, but even at it's worst it still wasn't as bad as 1968.
Post WW2 was a slow effort at Liberalizing a Socialist USA from both populist left & right sides with middling success and huge involvement from the USSR.
MLK had outlived his usefulness. Far more valuable as a martyr. Supposedly he was scared of going on stage in the later parts of the movement, probably because he knew what the script held for him
(reminder than the man who played MLK, a degenerate commie sex pervert, was nothing remotely like he was portrayed in media, and was essentially pure fiction).
People really, really don't want to acknowledge just how much of MLK's activism was pure scripted propaganda, and driven by northern backers.
For instance, he and his coterie traveled through several southern states(even received a police escort through one of them) until a retarded Democrat Governor from Alabama decided to give them exactly what they wanted.
Makes you wonder if the FBI guy that killed MLKJr was a rogue agent or if they were still fighting for control of the government with the commies.

I wish I could get the real story of the Second American Civil War in the 40s-80s, I would bet that it's an insane tale.
There wasn't a civil war between 1940-1980.

The reporters following the march were disgusted by the depraved shit they witnessed, but none of their editors would print anything about it.
