Fighting with the commies. The Johnsonians had gotten what they needed out of him, and the Communists were fucking everywhere. I think they figured that with MLK out of the way, they could either seize control over the movement or let it completely burn down (the way that BLM burned itself down after stealing all that money from California dems).
Instead, the Communists saw it as their moment for a "General Uprising", and provoked the greatest internal domestic strife since the civil war, causing over 1,000 race riots, killing over 150 people, lasting most of the summer, and required the deployment of US Army Infantry and US Marines into the US to quell some of the rioting. You thought 2020 was bad, but even at it's worst it still wasn't as bad as 1968.
Post WW2 was a slow effort at Liberalizing a Socialist USA from both populist left & right sides with middling success and huge involvement from the USSR.

I wish I could get the real story of the Second American Civil War in the 40s-80s, I would bet that it's an insane tale.
