When most people say Asians, they mean the good ones. It's just implied.
But, yeah, the subversives do get sneaky with it. The UK is especially bad with this, with their Asian Grooming Gangs and the like. Ironically, an Asian would never get caught dead engaging in that sort of language subversion, since even most good Asians hate the other groups of good Asians, much less the "Asians."
Asian just defaults to Indian in UK English, makes sense considering their history.
In the US Asia means east Asia because as a Pacific country, that is who historically we had the most dealings with.
Thomas Sowell's Immigrations And Cultures goes into this in excruciating detail as he lays out that certain immigrant groups, because they are from particular areas, are going to do better than other similar immigrant groups, or even the originating population. The cultural practices that inform their success are down to even the street level, separated by time.
This is why you get shit like Pakistanis being horrified that Pakistani Grooming Gangs are just going on a hate-rape campaign in Britain: it's because we are explicitly importing pedophiles.
The good ones are Japanese. Beyond that the only difference between south and (non-Japanese) east is how crude they are about their lack of integrity.
