I don't know if it's bad writing or what, but the Jedi seem to be massive cunts in most if not all EU material. Of course with the 00s and onward when rooting for the villain became cool and edgy, they tried shit like the Acolyte and made it even worse.
Seems writers just couldn't figure out how to depict Jedi the way they were envisioned in the original trilogy. There, they were a mysterious ghost of the past who tapped into powers few really understood, and were so strong that having just one involved in any given conflict would tip the scales to the side he was on. But when it came to depicting the order in the flesh, no one could figure out how to make the Jedi powerful and respectable, but not too much that they could still be feasibly overthrown. Hence why we get them looking weak, incompetent, and maybe even a bit malicious in some ways. And when even George Lucas couldn't figure it out in the prequel trilogy, that just set everything in stone.
The jedi order, the religious /governmental/ military collection of jedi, was never a “good” thing in the Star Wars universe - the jedi orders, like the various sith empires, were always destined to fail because they never lived in balance with the force - this was Lucas’ point all along, especially in the prequels
Anakin was the chosen one, and he did bring balance to the force - by destroying both the sith empire and the jedi order
