If the parents aren't doing so, then getting a vitriolic reaction to elicit shame, humiliation or some other negative emotion from someone in the community is a form of doing so.
In fact, its something that literally all of us had happen at one point or another in our childhood. An adult got mad at our behavior and insulted us in a not-so-gentle way.

It wasn't my parents, it was random adults around the neighborhood. Because they weren't my parents and didn't have to be nice to me fucking with their life, stuff and space. It was just a sentence or a few words, and a lesson was learned about what not to do.
The white ones would call me a coonass, a slur for our own ethnic group that is equivalent to how blacks use "nigga" themselves as a reclaimed insult. And the black ones would call me all sorts of names they made up for white people.
