Pretty sure Mari222 is not an industry insider and the bit about banks is just them guessing.
Japanese companies are NOTORIOUS for being resistant to borrowing. They operate their books on cashflow rather than credit. It's admirable, sort of, but the unwillingness to take on debt at all is a contributing factor to why they've spent the last 30 years in stagflation.
Yes, but it also means you don't attempt to grow with business cycles. There is such a thing as being TOO risk averse.
But in this case... for better or worse, banks have basically no sway over the animation industry; not IN Japan anyway. You can't pressure on someone who doesn't owe you anything.
Pretending like the banks don't have any power is naive. And if the banks didn't , the card companies certainly do, like how mastercard and Visa by making it so that people can't buy Japanese things with cards
Doesn't really influence what gets greenlit. Anime producers know what sells. So far as I've seen their response to western prudishness has been contempt.
They'll make more money slapping the latest anime tiddies on a JR card than they will from Visa and MasterCard combined.
They also know what doesnt sell. So you will see anime producers sometimes pick up some sort of woke media because someone made a good pitch and tried to convince them it would sell. Then when it doesnt, instead of doubling down like a Western company would, they say "Well, so much for that" and move on to the next one.
Erm...

Being resistant to borrowing is a good thing. Also the problem is the card companies

That doesn't bother the producers in the slightest.
"Fuck America" is not an uncommon sentiment over there. They don't care if we buy or not.
True but the comment is about ccard transactions not loans.
Shrug

Yes they do.
Incidentally the biggest title in Japan right now is a setting that has legalized prostitution and state sanctioned indentured service.
