Women don't really get that stronger and faster during puberty. 16-19 year old girls have a similar performance to 13 year old boys, 25-35 year old women have a similar performance to 14 year old boys. It's not that hard to imagine an outlier 12 year old girl outcompeting most adult women.
For reference, competitive results for a 5k (3 and 1/8 miles for my fellow 'muricans) among college (and possibly elite) women athletes is about 15-16 minutes.
Also, depending on the course or scheduling, the girl might have seen the aide win. 36 seconds' difference puts them close to 200 yards/meters apart.
