A lot of the Assassins since 2 live more a double life. Back when they actually had good writers, it was revealed in 2 and revelations that Altair when he took over changed their structure so they could blend in to society than stick out.
It also follows the pattern of those that have experienced loss or a fall from grave they didn't deserve joining the Assassins for revenge/answers. Starting off as a ninja from the get go sounds more like the first game than the others following it.
Hey, I agree, I played the original Assassin's Creed up to Black Flag before I dipped. You want to know how long we were calling for Assassin's Creed in Japan because ninjas?
Since 2, they got even bigger with the animation Embers when they showed a Chinese female Assassin. And after waiting SO LONG they give it to is but gotta put a gay/bi black guy in it along with a gay/bi female ninja and call the black dude a historical character even though we've NEVER played as a historical character before.
I'd say the selling point started off as parkour movement but what started to really sell it was hanging out with historical characters like Da vinci, BlackBeard, Washington etc, them doing this ruined that appeal since they'll literally diversify history as it used to be fun looking at their codex for the history of people and places. Their current one, they can't tell Chinese and Japanese apart!
For as much of a weeb as I am, I'm thinking an Assassin's Creed China might have worked out better. I have to wonder if Ubisoft would have produced the game in the same haphazard way, and what the reaction of Chinese people would have been.
It probably would've worked out better, given how many different fractions existed in China all trying to assume power at the sane time, it's good set up for an Assassin's Creed game.
And if they fucked it up like shadows, then they'd be more fucked as even Tencent wouldn't buy them.

Right, but the whole point is that the earlier AC games are basically ninja parkour, but slower paced and without the ninja.
Making a fast paced AC game with ninja trappings is the most obvious low hanging fruit that everyone would have enjoyed.
Just like the pirate AC game.
Ninjas, pirates, knights, zombies, robots and/or space shit are like the most basic settings. And ninjas make the most sense for an assassin game
