One of the reasons why the Russians have such issues with homosexuality is because most of the male population has one time or the other been raped during their mandatory conscription service in the Russian military.
Perhaps this American decided that the Russian military was simply too gay for him and they didn't respond too kindly to the suggestion. :')
Even though he's fighting against Ukraine, many Russians are so radicalized against the West that he likely was not trusted or viewed in a good light. Some Russians probably just didn't like him and killed him.

Hazing with electric torture seems unlikely to say the least. Not as unlikely as the other comment about a gay rape majority though.
