His weapon appears to have been a modern AK-47 variant, with a proper scope, (what looks like an elongated barrel?), while using the fencing and bullet proof vests to create a fighting position, to fire at the president from 300 yards. An eagle eyed sniper happened to see him in time to take a shot.
It makes sense if you really hate Russians. But, if you're interested in protecting people, you might be better off joining Poland or Finland. Hell, I bet Latvia or Estonia would be happy to have some fighters.
