Given that the entire point of the State Department is diplomacy and everyone was scared shitless about the USSR nuking us, that actually doesn't strike me as as bad as you make it out to be. Yes there were a shit ton of commies inside our government, but that specific metric is not as damning as it sounds. 1/3 of them being Communists is a very different metric.

The entire point of the State Department is to push for Fabian Socialism within the US. Diplomacy is a side-hustle they stole from the US Ambassador Corps. Basically, it's "diplomacy" when Fabians in Britain and the US conspire together.
In fact, the USSR nuking us looks like it was a very limited possibility. We would have won a nuclear exchange, and more-over, the USSR wouldn't have had nuclear technology if it weren't for it's spy programs that the State Department allowed to go forward due to their Socialist sympathies.
