I thought Warhammer fans were very protective and did a good job with gatekeeping. Although Games workshop is notorious for this kind of thing
It sounds like there will be a split between fans and the creators. BattleTech has a similar problem happening.
That was mostly for Warhammer 40k. Fantasy ended and got replaced with AOS. They took some "liberties" with AOS from the start so the fans are not gatekeeping.
40k also lost my interest once they added female Custodes despite being against the lore and then gaslighting everyone that there were always female custodes.
Haven't played or painted since.
Going to give Space Marine 2 a shot but if that fails 40k is dead to me.
Don’t hold your breath on Space Marine 2. Lead writer is in protected in Twitter but picture and flag should tell you everything.
The trailers are just macho stuff so far so it may end up good
Daily reminder that despite their twitter and codex virtue-signaling for good-boy points, there's no plans to release updated Custodes models or special heads for the so-called 'female' Custodes.
These people ruin everything they touch.
I assume they will try to make some hideous looking hero models. They've already put one in the lore
There is just not enough Age of Sigmar fans to gatekeep something like this. Age of Sigmar is currently Games Workshop's worst selling product and at current rate will probably follow Warhammer Fantasy in being squatted.
The starter sets sit on the shelves at 50% off MRSP for 4+ years and every independent retailer and game store I've seen given input on it has said there is less and less players and engagement yearly.
Former employees have revealed there are serious management and inter-team issues in the company so it's weird they're doubling down on this stuff.
I never played Fantasy, but given what I've seen people say, Warhammer Fantasy was a Tabletop Wargamer's Wargame with all that implied.
Given that they decided to nuke all that in the most brutal and ignoble way possible, and replace it with a game that was damn-near unplayable until something like 3 editions in, while alienating all thier old players - well, what the fuck did they think was going to happen?
I keep seeing a lot of speculation (though I have no way of confirming it) that The Old World is outselling AOS now. If that is true, it could also be a temporary sales blip or it could be people jumping ship/back into proper Fantasy.
I haven't seen numbers but I'd believe it.
Alot of the AOS secondary community (Store owners, Youtubers, etc) have said AOS sales have been decreasing year over year and are losing players at a steady rate.
You can pick up the 3rd Edition AOS big box set for 50% off right now, and that's been on the market for 3-4 years. GW a couple years ago ran an honest to god sale on their official store just to get rid of them.
Even the new 4th edition set has only been out for about a month and is already 30% off and has unlimited copies available direct from GW.
I got two of the 3rd edition boxes for $100 total, at the time I chalked it up to Stormcast fatigue
im going to be an aos simp
But a lot of that is the sigmarines just being far less popular while gw tries to push them as hard as marines to replicate that same thing. You 40kers have 80% of people playing marines, if you try to look at popularity of discords or subreddits or polls done in the main aos servers and subreddits, to see what the popular aos factions are, or if you just look at what you see in the community, sigmarines are nowhere near as dominant as space marines are in 40k. About 7-10%, only just above some other major ones and losing to some others.
I think it has issues, but I think the starter boxes aren't a indicator. Because its always forced full of sigmarines that nobody wants. And so those boxes have never been in anywhere near the same demand.
Warhammer is already gone. You can't fight gatekeep if the company itself is woke, similar to WoTC.
They just need to build up their "modern mainstream audience" and then they can start cutting all the old fans out.
oh and we'll delete your army and this is what we're replacing it with
Haven't checked but it would not be surprised if they made him OP to the point you have to have him in your army just to stand a chance
The rules haven't been revealed yet but I doubt it. While they've done that alot in the past, they have focused alot on this edition of the game to be balanced and welcoming to new players. Mostly because AoS is doing terrible sales wise and they need new blood and cash.
They did delete huge parts of the Stormcast Army to get people to buy the newer models but from what I've seen that hasn't worked at all and all the new sets are already being incredibly discounted.
it needed a cleanup, it was suffering from bloat.
But then they immediately bloated it up again.
I'd have spun the old magic ones into their own faction, advance the story and have them deteriorate.
Kept the beastmen too.
While I agree there was bloat, squatting the 1st edition models and then immediately just replacing them with the exact same units was dumb.
I'd of led 4th edition with a different faction. Stormcasts have never caught on and they should of realized it when Dominion box sets still can be found at 50% off mrsp 3-4 years later. Maybe give Cities of Sigmar the spotlight or the Malerion Elf models that have been rumored for years.
Skaventide can be found for over 30% off and it's been only one month since release.
C'mon proud hippogryph, as soon as the rider demands use of pronouns, just throw them off.
