We had a movie outing at work and saw it. In the plus side there was no climate change discussion and compared to current year stuff the wokeness wasn’t all over. One thing I couldn’t help but notice is the perfect ratio of diversity. I was born and raised in Oklahoma and I almost laughed out loud seeing every small town be super diverse. Sad thing is I wouldn’t have paid attention 15 or more years ago but you can’t help not noticing.

For the times we live in not a bad movie

A bit more lowkey, in that she's capable of smiling and has a personality that wouldn't immediately set off all the cats hissing when entering a room, but still a Mary Sue.

I find it sad how I’ll give a movie points for simply not having the “I’m a strong woman who don’t need no man” speech. Or I’ll watch some b movie from the 80s or 90s on one of the free streaming services and absolutely enjoy it because the men are masculine and women are feminine. There is normal romance, and a black character isn’t lecturing everyone. Also period pieces from the past look like the period they are trying to portray. Amazing how I took these things for granted

The 1996 Helen Hunt version was pretty girlbossy as well.

Bill Paxton is portrayed as a city weatherman who sold out and is dating a prissy therapist. He returns to beg his ex-wife to sign their divorce papers.

Helen Hunt is the fearless stormchaser leader in a dirty wifebeater driving alone because...a tornado specifically targeted her childhood home and family???

The rest of the men on her team are all nerdy, kooky betas.

The Aryan chad Carl Elwes character who plays the heel is portrayed as privileged, unethical and so arrogant that it leads to his death and his entire crew.

I liked it back in '96 and can still watch it today.

But taking a step back, there’s lots of 2024 already in 1996.

She isn't a girlboss. She has a talent for knowing how things will play out with tornadoes. And even with that, she can and does get things wrong. One of those mistakes kills a handful of her friends.

Additionally, the other guy who the movie starts off making him seem like just a thrill seeking cowboy who drives a truck into tornadoes for the hell of it is just as smart about tornadoes, and has to help her on multiple occasions.

EDIT: Now that I am thinking about it, her boss is also portrayed as being a scumbag seeking to profit off of tornado damage even though he is a "POC".

Was she a mom in this as that at least lowers the Mary sue count.

What can I say, it's more believable for a woman in film to be at least more 'mid boss' level when it's because they went full momma bear mode.

From iconic Ripley from Aliens 2 and "get away from her you bitch!" to Kill Bill as technically that entire series was momma bear out for revenge.
