Most the time they can't even be helped. You can only make their lives move comfortable. They don't want to get out of their situation, so you're stuck with adult sized toddlers till the day they die. I've had to work with them in the medical scene and they are by far the most demanding and entitled assholes you will ever meet.
yup. Most of them are essentially adults who said "fuck it, I'll just do drugs till I die". the more comfortable we make that lifestyle through handouts, the more we will create.
I no longer have any remorse for turning away panhandlers. they've got food stamps, so they're not hungry. they've got the shelters, so they have a roof if they need it. They will not take any of the money that you give them and put it towards bettering their lives, they will use it for drugs or slightly more expensive food.
Exactly. You're already paying for it without your consent via taxes. Pan handlers are getting you to double dip. Assuming they aren't flat out scamming. It is so fucking obnoxious getting stopped at that red light while one of those motherfuckers with their sign awkwardly stares right at you for what feels like an eternity.
Staring is nothing to complain about. In some ways, I would prefer them to shut down the shelters and wasteful administrator salaries and let them live in their california shanty towns.
The NYC ones that walk up, knock on window, pointing to their sign, or too lazy to even make a sign, and then complain about only getting a dollar (they expect at least $10) are the worst. Especially on holidays. I never give them anything but I overheard them before fleeing that shithole city. The nasty ones should just rot in prison.
I guess that's just a West Coast thing. I have never encountered one TOO overly aggressive like that. Though the gas can motherfuckers will sometimes come up to you. I hadn't considered the idea of varying breeds of homelessness... makes sense.
You guys don't see them mask off in charity work because they're trying to get something and so they play nice.
I've worked with the homeless roofing, where they have no reason to BS you. They have no compunction about stealing from anyone, raping, even covering up murder, in order to get a fix.
It's also a problem that having a full time job will not necessarily make you able to afford to get off the streets. The rental market is out of control and the only people who benefit are migrants and landlords.
Yea but that also gets into inflation and the federal reserve sadly most people don’t care or their eyes glaze over when you talk about fiat currency or inflation
That and they don't have a social network that would allow them to safely live with other people that wouldn't re-invigorate the problem. Everyone of their old friends are all drug users too.
And this me saying this, but even fixing the monetary problems doesn't fix the social problems. It just makes the currency and regulatory issues less of a problem.
That's exactly the problem. You can't make their lives more comfortable. You actually have to make their lives worse until they choose to get out.
I listened to a guy who actually ran homeless shelters in the UK and he said that you should never give money to homeless people because it allows them to stay out on the streets longer. Until they can be forced back to the shelters, where they will basically be forced to get counseling and drug rehab or jailed (where they will also be forced to at least get clean).

I’ve worked with some through church or other projects and it is sad that only a few I worked with were really trying to get out of poverty
