No it wasn't, and all the available evidence shows it was Al-Qaeda.
It definitely was. Well, the Feds, Israel and the Saudis. Just had a few Al-Qaeda guys fly the planes.
Old B-52 crew guys showing up is both funny and makes complete sense. That is some serious responsibility to shoulder.
In every case I heard, they didn't need the pilots, but that ain't gonna stop those flyboys from trying.
And as you note, it's not crazy. Normally, militaries haven't needed to pull full-on civilians back; but I think there were pilots during Black Buck 1 who hadn't flown the Vulcan bomber in years that needed to get retrained.
