According to court filings, Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, intends to enter into a plea agreement with the U.S. Justice Department this week to admit guilt to a conspiracy charge. This will allow Assange to be released from a five-year sentence in a UK prison.
Court documents state that Assange was accused of conspiring to collect and reveal material related to national defense through “criminal information.”
In a letter to U.S. District Judge Ramona Manglona of the U.S. District Court for the Northern Mariana Islands, Justice Department official Matthew McKenzie stated that Assange would enter a guilty plea in court on Wednesday at 9 a.m. local time, or 7 p.m. ET on Tuesday. The DOJ also stated that Assange is expected to return to Australia, where he is a citizen, after the proceedings.
Primarily: Excellent.
Secondarily: I wish he didn't have to plea to anything; that's fucking bullshit.
Tertiarily: Mostly I just wanted to say "tertiarily." But, on a more serious note...if I were him I would not be returning to Australia. Or anywhere else that has any significant relationship with the US. Going back to Australia is asking for trouble, one way or another. It's island time, man. He's earned it.
This entire farce is an indictment on our corrupt feminist justice system globally.
It's good that he's out of jail but bad that what he did is officially established as a federal crime, unless the new rule is used against leftists.
Have they not all been leftists? Assange, Snowden, Bradley Manning, all of them were leftists under GWB/Obama, still are as far as I know. Can't think of any dissident right journalists being persecuted for leaking national defense secrets or whatever the fuck. Though Owen Shroyer (of Data Battle) was jailed for two months for filming the protests at the Capitol. Filming.
What he did was already covered by the precedent of the Pentagon Papers. So, looks like the new rule is that the government will ignore precedent when convenient.
Trump still needs to pardon him.
Trump hired the worst people and was a lazy fuck as president.
I will never fucking understand how anyone can reason themselves into a position that accepts a country holding a citizen of another country to extradite for treason against a third country.
The 180 Reddit did about Assange was the biggest eye-opener for me.
if he's smart he'll go live on a farm and never appear in public again, because they'll kill him.
he deserves to be done with society.
I'm sure his time served will be entirely uneventful.
Keep an eye on that plane.
That's good to hear.
*Saipan. He has to face trial in the US overseas territory of the Northern Marianas before they’ll (supposedly) let him fly back to Aus…
So there’s still a little way to go yet.
