Pretty much any musician has taken inspiration from somewhere. Full disclosure: I love Elvis’s music and have everything by him and am planning to visit Graceland. To me if you were to say you invented something or didn’t give credit where it’s due then that is stealing. Elvis frequently talked about his influences from black and white musicians. His first two songs were a cover of a blues song and a bluegrass song.
By this logic Howlin Wolf and Mississippi John Hurt “stole” music because they were greatly influenced by Jimmie Rodgers. Or how many rap songs sampled past music?
The guitar is a purely European invention, the lyre dates to Mesopotamia, the modern “band” of 3-5 members is based on minstrel bands. The “field hollers” are even considered to be Islamic in origin.
Yep. Difference in inventing a style and innovating. Hendrix was an awesome guitarist but he didn’t invent rock or the guitar. I didn’t know field hollers were Islamic. Thought they were something slaves did
Islam and black African slavery has been a thing since the ~800s so a good amount of the war slaves sold transatlantic were either former Muslim slaves or were captured by Muslims. Some historians have noted some of the rhythms are almost direct translations of the Islamic prayer music, which in turn is directly taken from Christian hymnals.
Very interesting. Thanks. I didn’t even know about Islamic slavery and was only vaguely aware of African slavery before reading Sowell. I’d love a legit documentary mini series going over non western slavery

Oh, is that what they are always talking about smoking? I totally misunderstood the slang obviously.
lol. Fixed it. Sampled. I hate autocorrect sometimes
Yeah autocorrect does some crazy things. I'd guess that's why we are in a discussion about some guy named Parsley too.
