When Google foisted "flat" design on us they made a behind the scenes video about it.
They left in an interview with one of their peon-level designers who was asked why they're doing it and said "no idea it's objectively worse in every way" (paraphrased because if I have to see that video again my brain will asplode).
They must have worked on Smart TVs because they're practically unusable. No clear feedback on where the cursor is? Check. Banners that are also buttons? Check. Going to the global Settings menu to log out of an app instead of doing it from the app? Check. Reacting to a remote control press several seconds later? Check. The power button not actually turning off the TV but putting it in a sleep mode so that later it wakes up with even worse performance and other issues? Check.
Outside of shorts being to the right of the video I'm watching I didn't really notice anything either. And I'm on youtube daily.
I do have a bunch of blockers that might mess with their script so maybe that's why? Don't know don't care.
Not being able to close the shorts on the side of videos like you can on the homepage is really irritating me, might tampermonkey a script to make that go away.
For years, nobody:
Some brand new MBA: I have this great idea to completely change our key product for everyone!
The techs who will have to do the actual work and then deal with all the fuckups it brings: 🙄🔫👈
They probably have a whole gaggle of pink-haired UI and accessibility designers who have to justify their existence every now and then.

The old layout is back for me as well. Thank fuck.
Can we get some screenshots, I still have the new layout.
UK here and it looks the same to me.
New layout? I haven't noticed anything.
It must be a phone thing. That's all I can figure.

It's been back for a couple of days for me. Let's see if they've given up on the redesign or are just tweaking things before it comes back.
Probably some random AB testing.
