For all we know he may actually be dead and the story is a lie to instil hopelessness.
They'll make him a martyr if they take him out.
But if they make him suffer, prolonged, like they're doing with the wikileaks founder, no one will ever do what he did again, knowing what's coming.
The strength of someone's conviction can only go so far when the entire system revolves around punishing those that upset the old farts in charge.

There's no benefit in suiciding him. Continuing to live does the regime no harm.
