Didn’t know that, but now that you mention it, I can’t think of an earlier example.
I bet George Lucas never read any of the Star Wars books before making A New Hope, just like with KK and not reading any of the EU!

I'm sure there were bad adaptations before that, but nobody bragged about it.
There were bad adaptations, sure. But this guy did it intentionally. I'm not a fan of the david lynch version of Dune for example, but can you imagine Lynch saying, "meh, I never read the books."
