Considering in the 90s we used to play "smear the queer" and call each other fags and retards as insults, it's basically going to be impossible for any show/movie about the era to use period-accurate language.
Personally I don't know why you wouldn't just watch shows/movies made in the 90s if you want to see a story that takes place in that era. Most of it made it to DVD at least, so it's not like you have to find a working VHS player and TV with analog inputs.
One of my foster kids only has shorts for church. I made sure his tie was short. I tried to explain to my wife what a Fag Boy was, but she kept saying it was inappropriate.
