She was a great singer for sure but I never remember hearing her being referred to this way
I wouldn't even call her songs Rock 'n Roll.
Me neither. Dumb they have to give her that title when she was a highly acclaimed singer.
She wouldn’t even consider herself rock and roll which is why they made the claim posthumously
Of course. I think their excuse will be that she collaborated with Rolling Stones. I mean so did Aretha Franklin
So... Just like the black janitor that emptied wastebaskets in the patent office. 200 years later, he invented the lightbulb.
I just heard it on a stupid google ad and it was the one of the “most searched” bs
All I remember is the crack. I'm not old enough for her music.
She had some hits when I was little and then that movie about her life but I’ve always been very retro with music so as a teenager I was listening to very old blues and country music
Ike was the soul man. Tina was just eye candy with the rest of the Ikettes.
If anyone were to be labelled the "Queen of rock'n'roll", I'd be more likely to look at someone like Debbie Harry from Blondie.
Blondie was more disco pop and some people credit her with creating the rap genre by accident with Rapture. I'd give the title to Joan Jett with no problem though.
Don’t forget Wanda Jackson
Joan Jett, meh. She had an interesting voice, but few of her songs are particularly memorable. There's "Bad Reputation" and "I Hate Myself for Loving You" that are interesting, I'll grant her that, but her most famous song, "I Love Rock 'n' Roll", was only a cover of the song by "Arrows", and was less interesting than the original.
I'd agree with u/ernsithe's other suggestions, though. They're all good candidates. I might also consider adding Janis Joplin to that list, too.
I'll agree.
Girl rock is strange and hard to gauge, especially the early stuff.
Did you know that if you open a bar and don't want the place to become a hangout for rough crowds or troublemakers, mixing female rock into your playlist will discourage that? It's subliminal but somehow diluting the music with it sucks the testosterone out of the venue's vibe.
Recently, I was listening to Alice Cooper talk about Blondie on the radio, about how nice they were in person, and mentioning an occasion when they opened for him.
Considering they were in the same crowd as so many other rockers, I tend to paint them in the same brush. Songs like "Call Me" and "One Way or Another" are definitely in the rock genre, as far as I can tell.
