The problem is that the Americanization of "white" means the term is already fluid and doesn't make sense. It's original use was more to describe the people of British descent. So, by definition, "white" being expanded out to include Spaniards, Russians, and literally the people of the Caucuses already changes the dynamic of who is white and who is mixed race.
On top of that, you already have white simply being adopted as a slur against mestizos. If you are mixed race, and politically approved: you're "brown", if you are mixed race and politically disapproved: you're "white". So, the entire political Left isn't even working with a definition of white that isn't simply just a slur and a stand-in for "bourgeoise". So, "pushing mestizos" doesn't make sense within their framework.
