She has a rather devoted fanbase and is one of the most popular musicians on the planet, ever.
Is this true though? Or are they merely telling us that to socially pressure it into reality? Because when it comes to "almost entirely female" fanbases like hers that's how they operate. They tell you how big they are until you just believe they are and are forced to participate to feel part of a social trend.
Especially as, relative to many other "most popular ever" names, her actual production and cultural footprint is minimally felt to anyone. If the media didn't write about her every other breath and minuscule detail you would forget she exists, whereas Michael Jackson was still dropping music that everyone was listening to even outside his fanbase and personal life.

Exactly this. I do not care about Taylor and I don't hear a lot of her music in public. I got one of her albums a while ago and while it was ok, nothing stuck. It's like her looks, there's nothing that stands out as obviously bad, but she's not a stunner no matter how much praise she gets. Her legs are just long and thin, big deal.
The entire persona of Taylor Swift as a precocious 16-year old who wrote her own way to fame is a relic of legacy media anyway when people were credulous enough about show business to believe that BS.
People with limited or poor taste tend to latch onto the same musical artists that were popular and appealed to their sensibilities when they were in their teens or early 20's, and seem to stick with them for ages, rarely expanding their horizons beyond that.
Might be more of a thing with women in particular too, but I'm not positive.
Most people can at least give you some plot beats of Avatar though. Its not a quotable detailed account, but we all know its Pocahontas with aliens. There is a dude who uploads himself into a blue body, they have Tree USBs, and he betrays everyone.
Avatar 2 though, fuck man I still don't even know if that existed.
