"Social Justice Warrior" absolutely began as an insult - it's an evolution of "keyboard warrior" i.e. someone who might talk a good game but is full of shit.
Which itself was the evolution of "armchair warrior" (along with its cousin, the "armchair quarterback"). The concept has been around for a very long time.
