Maybe this is an ironic joke that I’m just not hip enough to understand, but Redfern is, and has been since the 70s, an absolute shithole.
Like, the closest Australia gets to a ghetto, pretty much… Abo central. Literally saw a drug deal in the middle of the street, between a teenage Abo and some old blokes, earlier…
It’s becoming “hipster” and “gentrified”, now, but it’s still an absolute dive…
The fact that Sydney has actual ethnic (Muslim, Indian, Leb, Portuguese) ghettoes even worse than this is… Impressive.
But anyway, the fact that they’ve opened a “Detroit style” pizza chain here is just… Too much self-aware hipster irony for me, tbh…
Opposite a barcade and a sea shanty bar. Because of course…
While the streets are full of filth, and the buildings literally fall down around it.
Straya. Love it…
I'm not sure what they would even mean by "Detroit style", beyond that the indie pizza shops in Windsor had a habit of slicing pepperoni into little strips, instead of presenting them like great big honking eyes all over the pie. You get more pepperoni distributed more evenly that way, and damn, I do miss it. No one else does it that way for some reason. Keeping in mind Windsor was known for having more Italian expats and descendants than New York City (and was gifted a nice fountain by Rome because of it.)
Detroit style is the original variety of what people call Chicago style pizza. Square deep dish.
Really? Never thought it was unique. It was just the shape the really big pizzas they'd make for catering puposes was. Big and square. The middle pieces are for the folks who don't like crust.
I mean it's not "unique" so to speak, pizza is an ancient idea. It was however the original variety while Chicago despite being more well known is the newer of the two.
It’s rectangular… That literally seems to be the selling point…
Which would have made sense to name it after the region in Italy that does that (can’t remember which), but I’m sure they’re blissfully ignorant of that fact…
The place is covered in edgy puns and attempts at “humour by sign”. It’s pretty damn cringe…
I hadn’t actually clicked the link yet, but yeah, this is exactly what it was!
Probably not as good as the original, though. This was… Not very cheesy, sadly.
Because it’s hipsters. They fuck everything up, ha.
Huh, interesting.
Well there you go…
Never would have guessed, lol!
Still ironic though!
Never thought the square shape was unique - it was the huge sizes that you'd see at school pizza parties, where one big square pizza would feed the same as two or three large round ones.
