My pastor dad theorizes that God would have been completely cool with the Israelites sparing their enemies if it had been done for the right reasons, eg, because they're humans too. But the only reason they ever spared the peoples God told them to wipe out was because they wanted slaves and wives, and the end results of them integrating barbarians consistently came back to bite them culturally and spiritually.
