I don’t even want these modern rpg characters in my party at all.
Its a shame that the "Rivalry" aspect from Dragon Age 2 never took off, because that could be the saving grace to most of these characters. Just the ability to have them in your party, developing their relationship and questline, and its entirely based on calling them out, insulting their stupidity, and making sure they know they are only there for what they can provide.
But that would undermine "The Message" of the character and lead to some ugly screenshots for twitter, so we can't have the option to disapprove of these characters at all.
That's what bothers me about this. The existence of these woke avatars doesn't ruin the setting (at least in small numbers), the fact that they're treated as normal does. If they had the balls to treat it as abnormal or even notable, and let the player respond accordingly, it could even strengthen the setting. Instead, everything has to be safe and inclusive, and the integrity of the setting is destroyed in the process.
I agree, and its something I enjoyed a lot about the earlier Bioware games. They had the annoying wokies trying to preach, but you could call them out on their shit most of the time and even other characters would get in on it. Anders from DA2 is given endless shit for his whiney "muh oppression" attitude, which would never fly today.
Shit, just show me a gay getting killed just for being gay in one of these settings, instead of the homophobia being toothless and safely evil like it always is.
