Chad is just shorthand for the top men that women choose for looks instead of demanding glorified prostitution arrangements. Dumb gym bro certainly fits the bill if he's good looking enough.
I'd say, seeing its use arise on incel type spaces in the late-00s/early-10s, it originally was a term of derision before The Red Pill really broke into prominence on the net.
I can see why there would be some holdouts still using it derogatorily but I don't think it's a healthy practice in the long run as the feeling behind its use in that way is suffused with envy. No different from the geeky loser in high school complaining about the "dumb jocks" (who he'd probably find aren't so dumb if he talked to them) on the school's ____team getting all the attention. The envy is bad for the soul, and the mindset bad for the progress he could make.
It certainly has different connotations depending on the space. I believe the incels still use it as a derogatory term, while red pillers see it as something to emulate. I use it the way MGTOW uses it: largely as a descriptor without value judgements.
Why are you using the term 'Chad' unironically, though?
Chad = dumb fitness guy stereotype.
t. Guy that's jealous he isn't a chad

Words change meaning over time. Good examples are the words awesome and gay.
