Cool tech. I used to drag out the Wii gun games to play with friends. Ghost Squad is the only one I can think of off hand. Things like that are so fun in groups like that and don't punish non-gamers all that hard. Don't have the Wii anymore, but I kept a couple Wiimotes and dumped all the games for emulators. Never even thought to try actual arcade ones though.
Yeah that’s how I’ve done it so far, a modded Wii goes a LONG way, a ton of great releases (and some shovelware lol) on it and you can emulate most things pre-ps1 with an OK lightgun feel.
Couple things you might be interested in - “dolphin bars” to let you use your Wiimote on dolphin on pc, and a software called “Lichtknarre” which is similar to gun4ir, you attach IR LEDs to your screen but it lets you use a Wiimote with pretty good accuracy (so I hear, looking to order a set of the LEDs on aliexpress soon and try it out before potentially going all the way and setting up gun4ir proper)
Here is the context I posted in the thread on c/emus (new community, check it out!):
The exception to the title obviously being the Wii’s infrared detector bar system, which the gun4IR system is effectively taking and building on, by using 4 IR leds positioned around the screen, and custom software running on a PCB embedded in the (custom made) lightguns.
There is also the Sinden system, which works by drawing a white border around your screen and performing trig calculations to determine where you were aiming your (custom made) lightgun. Based on comparisons I’ve seen (haven’t tested either), the Sinden system is a lot more finicky and just overall worse. Still it’s great that people are reigniting this scene, as I love gungames and think they’re basically peak arcade/vidya
Ah, my experience with VR is like 5 minutes playing Alien: Isolation, everything I’ve been hearing about lately though is making me think it might almost be time to check out the options - I’ve kind of avoided it so far thinking “it’s not there yet, it’ll only get cheaper and better, who cares”. But that’s interesting thanks - are you able to play emulators in VR to replicate lightgun games “authentically” yet?
That is fucking awesome and yet another example of what I was getting at, VR has finally had enough time to “steep” and people have begun to roll out killer apps, or atleast their early forms.
The potential for emulation is pretty awesome, “virtual arcades” and such seem like a really natural fit. Could you imagine multiplayer implementations? Im sure it’s been made already or is being worked on at least
I never could get these games to work, whether that was user error or bad hardware/setups, but I'm glad that a niche fanbase is getting supported still. Hopefully it pans out for them.
I wondered about those, like House of the Dead 4, and apparently they work basically the same way as this Gun4ir system (tracking ir LEDs mounted on the screen via a camera in the gun):

Here is a link to this cross post via communities.win if you use that:

Seems like that would be absolutely terrifying in VR.

That's cool, but there have been several light gun games in the arcades during this time. This is a great way to transfer old games onto new TVs.

i only ever played with a light gun once, in the 90s, when i was younger than 8.
How good is accuracy and speed with this new lightgun because because that was a problem with the Wii.
The reason a lot of light gun games (especially from the (S)NES era) don't work is due to latency issues.
