It actually was, somewhat briefly at least, used in conspiracy theory circles as a term to refer to those who were aware of the shit going on. Not especially wacky conspiracy theory stuff either, mostly relatable to the shit that we've been talking about here and the original KIA subreddits for years.
If I recall, the more recent usage draws from wacky black people spouting off nonsense about how "woke" they were. I forget most of the context.
Trump was even selling "Woke" hats for a while.
Aye. It popped up fairly frequently in r/conspiracy back around 2014-2016 if I recall, so that would fit the timeline.
It actually seems to have originated with some kind of more-extremist offshoot of Black Panther/Nation of Islam ideology in the form of a black supremacist cult that was around in the 1970s. Parcast Cults has an episode about it.
